WITH the breakout of another strain of swine flu, Launceston City Council Alderman Rosemary Armitage has called on state and federal support to get Launceston immunised.
"I am hoping with the second outbreak of swine flu overseas that we can be proactive here in Launceston hence my motion last week. Unfortunately, the general feeling is that people really aren't taking it seriously."
AMA Tasmania physician Dr Gerard Gill has immunised the Launceston City Council employees who put their hand up for the injection and Ms Armitage is encouraging others to put it on their Christmas lists.
She said most doctors' surgeries were bulk-billing the injections now but more still needed to be done.
"The State Government previously provided funds for the swine flu clinic and now they need to be proactive with the second strain," Ms Armitage said.
"Through my motion I would like to see council funded to provide these injections as part of our regular immunisation clinics. I appreciate that we can't fund it ourselves, and nor we should."
"To me it is being proactive rather than reactive - we were previously funded to run flu clinics once the swine flu hit. We should be funded to prevent it."
