Pool packages a stroke of luck or good management?

22 Sep, 2009 12:00 AM
LAUNCESTON Aquatic is targeting big businesses to encourage employees to hit the pool this summer.

Launceston City Council is itself included in the roll-out, having negotiated a unique offer for its employees.

The deal has been questioned by Launceston City Council alderman Jeremy Ball. He expressed concern over the flexibility of the memberships at an August council meeting.

General manager Frank Dixon said the membership deal was fixed by Launceston Aquatic, but Launceston City Council had provided added value for its employees, an estimated 500 people.

He said he hoped businesses would follow suit.

"What we also do with employers is we encourage them to offer additional incentives to encourage people to take on activities at Launceston Aquatic," Mr Dixon said.

"We welcome any other employer to be involved and, while it is a fixed membership arrangement, we encourage flexible arrangements from the employer."

The corporate membership rates are set according to the number of employees that have a membership at Launceston Aquatic.

A level one membership offers a 10 per cent discount for businesses with five to 10 employees enrolled. Level two offers a 15 per cent discount for 11 to 14 employees and the level three membership is a 20 per cent discount for 16 or more employees.

Launceston City Council employees are eligible for the level three discount.

On top of this, its corporate membership includes waiving of the set- up and administration fee ($30) and a 20 per cent discount on visitor passes.

Corporate memberships are available for three, six or 12-month periods and are offered on three levels based on the number of employees to sign up.

Alderman Ball said his inquiry was a bid to ensure the average ratepayer was not missing out.

"The reason I was looking into this is that I didn't want to see the individual who goes in and pays $5.50 to be the one who gets slugged when a lot of other groups are getting big discounts," Alderman Ball said.

During the development of Launceston Aquatic at Windmill Hill, major sponsor Rio Tinto Alcan secured a membership deal for its employees that was widely criticised.

Rio Tinto Alcan's 580 employees received family memberships in return for the company's $100,000 sponsorship for the centre.

"It is one thing if companies offer some sort of sponsorship in exchange for the discount, but I am not satisfied with just offering corporate discounts to firms with lots of employees," Alderman Ball said.

At the end of September the aquatic centre will be well on its way to a successful first season.

Mr Dixon recently reported Launceston Aquatic was on target with 87 members at present, but with only three corporate memberships.

"It is obviously early days for corporate groups but I am confident we will have many join up."

"Attendance figures are ahead of what we expected, at the beginning of September we had reached the 100,000 attendance mark, or 1000 people a day."

The centre has also responded to schedule problems which resulted in unrest among membership holders, by increasing the opening hours of the program pool.
