Tiger service takes prowl out of parking

22 Dec, 2009 12:35 PM
LAUNCESTON City Council has encouraged shoppers to avoid parking costs and take advantage of the new free Tiger Bus service this Christmas.

The bus aims to make it easy and affordable for people to use the Inveresk car park and access the CBD.

The new addition of an "explorer" bus means locals and visitors can access several of Launceston's key sites, including Launceston Aquatic and the Launceston General Hospital.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the initiative was part of the council's Parking and Sustainable Transport Strategy.

"This will reduce the amount of traffic and provide more short-term car parking spaces in the CBD for locals and visitors who need quick access to the city," Alderman van Zetten said.

"You don't even need to use the Inveresk car park to get on the free bus, you can hop on and off at any stop," he said.

Both the Tiger Run and the Tiger Explorer services are free and leave the Inveresk car park outside the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

The Tiger Run route is perfect for workers as it leaves in the morning and evening.

The Tiger Explorer is a 30-minute route that travels to the CBD, Prince's Square, Launceston General Hospital, Launceston Aquatic and City Park.

To council is also offering a parking discount for those who choose to purchase an Inveresk parking permit for the month.

The permit costs $30 and covers Inveresk parking for the entire month of December, including weekends.

Regular parking costs are $1 per hour or $3 per day (maximum).

The permits are available from the council's customer service centre at Town Hall or by calling 63233000.

•The Tiger Bus will leave the Inveresk car park every 15 minutes, from 7am to 9.45am, express to the CBD St John Street metro bus stop. In the afternoon it will run again every 15 minutes, from 4.15pm to 6.30pm, picking people up from the CBD and taking them back to Inveresk.

•The Tiger Explorer operates every half hour and does a 30-minute loop around the city, starting at Inveresk at 10am, until 3.30pm.
