NEW funding means Active Launceston is secure for at least three years and total money committed to the get-fit program is nearing $1 million.
Active Launceston project manager Lucy Marshall said the Tasmanian Community Fund had provided $195,000, meaning total funding for the project was $863,328.73.
Ms Marshall said the new money would be used for activities with spending of $65,000 a year for the next three financial years.
She said this was in addition to the $105,000 a year for administration from the key project partners - the University of Tasmania, the Launceston City Council and Sport and Recreation Tasmania.
Ms Marshall said the extra funding gave the project certainty and more time could now spent on developing activities, rather than chasing funding.
She said original funding for the project went to November, so the activity program had been locked in until then, but the organising committee would this month make decisions on next year's activities.
She said funding certainty was good news.
"It's seen as an ongoing project, also it is more attractive for groups because it is not seen as a project that may fall over," she said.
"Most importantly, the community knows it will be staying around."
Major activities for the rest of the year include a walk-run program on Wednesday evenings in City Park, more bike riding starting from September 1, activities in Northern suburbs parks re-starting when daylight saving returns and Walk to Work Day and Ride to Work Day, both in October, will also be supported.
Active Launceston tries to fill physical activity gaps in the community, with programs aimed at sedentary adults, older adults, people from lower socio- economic backgrounds and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
