Albert Hall to get a freshen up

20 Oct, 2009 12:00 AM
ONE of Tasmania's oldest buildings, Albert Hall, will receive federal funding to the tune of $1 million as part of the Federal Government's $650 million Jobs Fund.

Albert Hall is one of several sites across the state to receive funding, announced by Federal Environment, Heritage and Arts Minister Peter Garrett.

"This funding will help to refurbish Albert Hall's under- stage dressing rooms, improve access areas, increase safety through the improvement of exterior lighting, improve power distribution and painting," Mr Garrett said.

Built in 1891, Albert Hall is one of the most significant heritage buildings in Launceston.

Questions about the building's future use were raised when damage was caused to the balcony earlier this year during a live music show.

The balcony was crowded with young patrons, who were evacuated when a crack was noticed.

Bass Labor MHR Jodie Campbell welcomed the funding for one of Launceston's community centres.

"Albert Hall is the largest indoor community gathering space for Northern Tasmania, hosting up to 1200 people," Ms Campbell said.
