A SMOKING ban in the Brisbane Street Mall and for on- street dining areas is back on the agenda.
Launceston alderman Ivan Dean said he would soon ask the council to further restrict smoking in the city because of changing community expectations.
He has previously pushed for smoking restrictions.
Alderman Dean asked at last week's Launceston City Council meeting about progress on a survey of community attitudes to smoking in footpath eating areas.
He was told a report would be given to aldermen soon.
Alderman Dean said he would wait for the report and survey results and then propose a motion to ban smoking in the mall and on-street dining areas.
He said the council issued permits for footpath dining, so had the power to restrict smoking.
Alderman Dean, who is also the Windermere MLC, said he received a constant stream of emails from people wanting less smoke in the city and he thought it was time for more restrictions.
And he said he was working with Cancer Council Tasmania towards a statewide smoking ban in malls, which he would pursue in the Legislative Council.
Alderman Dean said both his parents died of cancer.
He said his father died at 66 from lung cancer and his mother died of another kind of cancer.
"We as a council should be controlling that (smoking in dining areas) because it is contrary to good health," Alderman Dean said.
"People are saying enough is enough and we do not need to be subjected to secondhand smoke."
