A NEW fence surrounding the First Basin swimming pool will increase safety for visitors this summer.
The decision was made in a December 2008 meeting of the Launceston City Council, along with the decision to have the pool patrolled at certain times by lifeguards.
The Basin pool was built in 1937 and this will be the first time such safety measures have been implemented.
Launceston City Council general manager Frank Dixon said the fence, which will surround the whole pool, was funded through a Federal Government grant.
"The fence is one of council's projects funded under the Federal Government's Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program and will stay up for the basin pool season," Mr Dixon said.
The fence is a semi-permanent structure which can be removed in the event of flooding.
Mr Dixon said the measure was in the best interests of visitors.
"The fence is part of measures to increase safety for residents and visitors, especially families, at the pool. These measures also include supervising the pool at certain times during the summer months."
The pool will be open for public use on Saturday, October 31, until March next year.
