Gorge `snail' gets a move on for opening

16 Jun, 2009 12:00 AM
SEPTEMBER is the expected completion date for the long- delayed Cataract Gorge entrance makeover.

Launceston Acting Mayor Rosemary Armitage said work would start within days on installing the pier brackets of the inclinator, after the moving footpath people-mover arrived from Sydney.

Alderman Armitage said the rest of the inclinator would arrive during the next six weeks.

She expected full installation by late July.

She said the 10-person inclinator would have four stops, providing easier access to the chairlift and volunteer centre, First Basin Cafe, First Basin lawns and swimming pool and the starting point for many walks and trails.

Other aldermen have described the makeover as the "Cataract Gorge snail" because it has been years in the making, with funding and design delays.

The inclinator is part of an overall project to improve visitor access and services to the Cataract Gorge Reserve.

This project also includes improvements to the existing car park which are expected to be completed by September.
