Tourism figures look good

TOURISM in Northern Tasmania has a bright future, according to the Launceston Tamar Valley Tourism Association.

The organisation conducted a survey last month that showed the downturn in the economic climate had not affected the industry negatively.

"Forward bookings are very healthy with overall numbers much better than last year," a spokesman said.

"The employment numbers are set to remain as they are, with potential to improve."

Considered the peak tourism body in the North, the organisation surveyed its members to find out about forward projections for the market and gain insight into overall market conditions.

"Tourism in Northern Tasmania is one of the largest contributors to the economy with over $600 million in visitor expenditure and with over $2 million bed nights, and growing," the spokesman said.

"Northern Tasmania has the largest percentage of employment in this sector than any other region in Tasmania.

"The latest traffic flow from the Launceston Airport showed another strong increase in the last quarter."

The Launceston Tamar Valley Tourism Association attributes much of the industry's success to events held in the region.

The Hogs Rally held in November was an example of events offering great opportunities when more than 3000 visitors attended.

"The real bonus was these visitors were in the upper socio economic sector," the spokesman said.

"This region can look forward to strong visitation through our iconic wine route and our highly awarded restaurants are set to do very well."

The Masters Swimming Championships in April 2010 are set to boost the region, as the event will attract hundreds of competitors and supporters to the city and surrounds.

AFL games at Aurora Stadium always draws high numbers of repeat visitors and the Regional Arts Conference to be held in August 2010 is also expected to be a big drawcard.
