Countdown for council election

20 Oct, 2009 12:00 AM
ENROLLED voters should now have received their ballot packs for the Launceston City Council election.

Voters have until October 27 to choose from 20 candidates, including 15 new to Launceston City Council.

Nominees have been on the campaign trail in the lead up to the voting period, making themselves known throughout the city.

Aside from the 20 nominees for aldermen, there are three nominees contesting for deputy mayor and two in the running for Mayor.

After working as a leadership unit for two years, Deputy Mayor Rosemary Armitage and Mayor Albert van Zetten are running against each other for Mayor.

In 2007 Alderman Armitage came through as the clear favourite against Robin McKendrick and Frank Nott for Deputy Mayor.

However the race for mayor was much closer, with a close contest between Alderman van Zetten and incumbent mayor Ivan Dean.

Alderman Ted Sands will also contest the position of Mayor again despite a disappointing campaign in 2007.

If you have not received a ballot pack or for more information go to www.electoral.tas. gov.au.
